Web Hosting

Web hosting is complicated and there are a lot of actors out there who compete against each other. The real challenge is to find services that are cheap, reliable, expandable and future proof. I’ve dealt with numerous hosts myself with varying degrees of satisfaction and for the last several years I’ve hosted all my sites (including this one) with 1&1 (1and1.com).

If you are in North America my recommendation is to use Linux hosting with 1and1.com . Their basic package called 1&1 Beginner is $3.99 per month which includes a domain (standard US domains, no .ca or any other non-US country), 10GB of web space, unlimited transfer and 600 email accounts. That’s pretty much all you need. If you are aiming to host more sites (like me – I currently host 20 sites under my plan) I recommend getting the 1&1 Home package which is $6.99 per month and currently has a 6 month free promotion. This plan comes with two domain names and 150GB of space – more than you’ll ever need.

For .ca hosting I use DomainPeople.ca and use DNS forwarding to link the domain names up to my 1&1 hosted sites.

These hosting recommendations are a work in progress and will be updated in April.
